So I’ve been listening to some audiobooks lately, namely Cell by Stephen King, and now Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. And I have to tell you, the dudes reading the books have FAR more control over how much I enjoy the subject matter than I ever would have thought.

Now I like Neil Gaiman, and have for a long time. And I like Anansi Boys, and own the book. But the way this dude is reading it, makes me feel… like a douche for liking it. Sentences that sound witty in my head, sound trite and forced when this guy reads it out loud. I find myself sitting in my car at 6 in the morning, feeling embarrassed to hear what the reader guy is saying, like its a daytime soap or something.

In contrast however, I find that the old shitty recording of the audiobooks for The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are both done very well. But of all I have ever heard, the Jeeves and Wooster audiobooks were all masterpieces. I listened to them almost every night in college, up until the point I began to self medicate at least.

ah, the good olde days.
