Bungie’s first map pack DLC for Halo 3 becomes free today. They have just announced the maps to be added in the forthcoming second map pack. I am in between multiplayer games right now, and my Halo 3 stint was cut far too short. I thought the game was pretty good and worthy to bear the Halo name; I’m speaking of multiplayer and not campaign- the Halo campaigns have never really awed me in any respect. So I am excited to get back in the groove. I’ll download the old maps, get a feel for the game again, and be ready to buy the new maps in a few weeks. The new maps include remakes of the original Halo’s Sidewinder, and Halo 2’s Lockout. I never had any strong feelings about Sidewinder, one way or the other, but Lockout became a favorite of mine over time. I don’t consider it as glorious as some others, but it is damn good. The reason my love for Lockout grew over time was due to the discovery of the Doom Lair. I shouldn’t say discovery, I didn’t discover it; it’s just a portion of the map I became fond of and made a name for. The lowest point in Lockout, in the center of the map, with the green lighting that leads to the jump platform is dubbed the Doom Lair in my mind. Some people bitch about camping in online games. I have mixed feelings about it. While it may be cheap, it is also effective and easily countered by any enemies with a bit of patience or ingenuity. I don’t consider what Kid C and I do in the Doom Lair to be camping. I think of camping as sitting in one spot waiting for someone to walk right into your cross hairs. We force and lure people into the Doom Lair to, well, meet their doom. We make that area our home and set up traps like we are in MacCally Culkin and they are the wet bandits. And it’s fun, and effective. Halo 3’s Guardian map is a spiritual successor to Lockout, but it’s just not the same thing, and the Doom Lair just doesn’t exist for us there. Not to say I don’t like Guardian, it’s one of my favorites. It even has a Doom area as well, but I won’t betray its location.
